Scholars estimate the text was written sometime between the 8th and 12th centuries, during a period when Indian society was becoming more conservative than it had been in ancient times. A popular legend suggests that Kokkoka wrote the Ratirahasya to please a king named Venudutta, which is why the text is often dedicated to a royal patron.
